Postsurgical Regimen at Contemporary Dental Implant Centre

The specialists at Contemporary Dental Implant Centre in New York’s metropolitan region maintain significant experience with dental implant surgery, performing more than 2,000 procedures annually. While the placement of dental implants is a common procedure, it still constitutes surgery. Patients need to adhere to a careful postsurgical regimen that manages pain, minimizes complications, and provides the best chance of a successful outcome.

To that end, Contemporary Dental Implant Centre provides comprehensive postoperative instructions, which patients should follow after implant surgery:

1. Avoid disturbing the wound the day of surgery by touching it, rinsing, or spitting.

2. Watch for bleeding for 24 hours, and control it by biting on gauze for 30 minutes. If excessive bleeding occurs, contact the practice for more instructions.

3. Manage swelling by applying ice to the affected cheek during the first 36 hours.

4. Take pain medication, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen, as soon as the anesthesia begins to wear off. For severe pain, the dentist may prescribe medication, so take as directed.

5. Take any prescribed antibiotics exactly as outlined in order to prevent infection.

6. Maintain proper oral hygiene. The dentist will prescribe Peridex Oral Rinse. Use it before going to bed the night of the surgery and then twice each day, in the morning and at night. Rinse with warm salt water four to five times per day as well. Brush teeth daily, taking care to be gentle in the area of the implant.

7. Avoid strenuous activity immediately following the dental surgery. If bleeding or throbbing pain occurs, discontinue activity.

8. Do not wear any prosthetic dental devices, including dentures or flippers, for at least 10 days after surgery.
